Randy Shaver is one of the Twin Cities most trusted and versatile broadcasters. He began his broadcasting career at WHO Radio in Des Moines, Iowa in the late 1970s while in college at Iowa State University, and later graduated with a Journalism BA. His first TV job, as sports director, was at KAAL-TV in Austin, Minnesota in 1981. He later moved to news anchor in 1982 before leaving for the Twin Cities. At age 24, he started at KARE-TV on January 1, 1983 as the weekend sportscaster.
In 1984, Randy and producer Jane Helmke developed the Prep Sports Extra, a show that highlights high school athletic competitions. Its highlight of Minnesota high school football led to Shaver being inducted into the Minnesota Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001. Randy became the sports director at KARE in 1994 until his promotion to news anchor in 2012.
The award-winning journalist was honored with the National and Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for sports reporting in 2006. He’s also won numerous Emmy Awards for broadcasting excellence.
Shaver also is a radio stalwart. First on KFAN radio in its infancy in the early 90s, and then a regular on the 93X morning show for over 20 years.
More importantly, Shaver is a two-time cancer survivor. He beat Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1998 and then prostate cancer in 2019. He and his wife, Roseann, are dedicated to supporting Minnesota’s cancer community. They began raising money in 1995 through an annual golf event which later led to the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund in 2003. The fund has raised over $8 million dollars for cancer research and patient aid in Minnesota.
Along with being a cancer advocate, loving father, and husband, Shaver is known for his work ethic and genuineness. What you see on camera is the way he is away from work: loyal, trustworthy, hardworking, and steady.
