It was no surprise when a poll taken in the 1980s found that the best known face in Minnesota belonged to the premier news anchor of his era, Dave Moore.

He attended the University of Minnesota and worked briefly at a Battle Creek, Michigan, radio station before joining WCCO TV Minneapolis/Saint Paul in 1950, working as an announcer and emcee. In 1957, WCCO TV sought a new anchor for its 10:00 p.m. newscast, and he got the job when Walter Cronkite turned it down. He had little background in journalism, but worked hard to master his craft, and viewers trusted his honesty, warmth, and real connection to the community. The Bedtime Newz, his late-night news satire, showcased his sense of humor from 1962 to 1971. He later hosted the highly regarded Moore on Sunday and The Moore Report news and public affairs programs. He recorded Talking Books for the Blind, and taught drama classes and was active in community theater. Recognized by audiences and peers alike as the dean of area newscasters, he anchored the 10:00 p.m. news until 1985, and the 6:00 p.m. news until 1991, and hosted Moore on Sunday until he became ill in 1997. He passed away, at the age of 74, on  January 28, 1998.
